If you’re planning to immigrate to Canada through a French-language pathway, chances are you’re choosing between TEF Canada and TCF Canada.
Both exams are officially accepted by IRCC (Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada), but many candidates ask the same question:
There is no universally “easier” exam, but trends from real candidates show:
👉 Many learners find TCF Canada slightly easier at lower and intermediate levels, while TEF Canada works well for structured, exam-oriented students.
The key truth:
The exam that matches your strengths is the easier one
TCF Canada (Test de Connaissance du Français) is an official French proficiency test created by France Éducation International.
Just like TEF Canada, it is fully accepted by IRCC for immigration purposes and assesses the same four skills:
The main difference lies in test format, scoring system, and question style, not in official recognition.
👉 Full details about TCF Canada are available here: https://ecolefamily.com/tcf-canada/
In short: both tests are valid, but they feel different in practice.

Question 1 of 6
| Immigration goal | Typical CLB target |
|---|---|
| Common eligibility threshold | CLB 7 |
| Competitive CRS score | CLB 9 |
| French language bonus points | CLB 7+ (maximum at CLB 9+) |
(Exact requirements depend on the immigration program, but these targets apply in most cases.)
Let’s keep this simple — because this is one of the most confusing parts of the Canadian immigration process 🙂
CLB (also called NCLC) is the Canadian language scale used by IRCC.
You do NOT take a CLB exam.
Instead, Canada converts your TEF Canada or TCF Canada results into CLB/NCLC levels.
👉 Think of it like this:
Exam score → CLB/NCLC level → immigration points
Imagine your results look like this:
✅ You meet the CLB 7 threshold
❌ You do not receive CLB 9-level bonus points, because not all skills reached that level
This is a very common situation — and exactly why targeted preparation works best.
